The problem with improvement via new year’s resolutions is that they tend to centre on removing things from your life - drinking, smoking, eating four packets of crisps on the bounce while pressing “refresh” endlessly on Facebook - rather than adding things. They’re all about making your life smaller. And I’m instinctively anti-smaller lives. Balls to smaller lives. Balls to denial and unhappiness and rationing. Our lives - like our hearts, our vocabularies and our hair - should all be about remorseless embiggenment.

What Guys Look For In Girls - a response to Nash Grier’s “What Guys Look For In Girls” video

My 2013

Jan/Feb
We were still living with our in-laws and I worked really hard teaching in my Gr. 4/5 classroom.   Had a few fun outings to 80s ROCK night, and Melissa had her bachelorette.

March
We all helped Melissa and Travis get ready for their wedding, we had a bridal shower, and helped with favours and such.   Over the March break, they got married at the Zoo - it was beautiful.  We house-sat so that we could watch their dog, and ours together.  During the break, Stefan and I tried a bunch of new restaurants in Calgary as well, it was awesome.   We tried Model Milk, Candela, Cibo, and Beer Revolution.

May

Again, worked REALLY hard on DIY for the wedding, and started winding down the school year with my students, went to Canmore to write report cards.  We went to a beer and food tasting at Willow Park which was awesome.  For my birthday, Stefan got me tickets to Cirque De Soleil’s, Amaluna, and we went to Edmonton!

June

The final month of school, we lost a lot of time because of the flooding that happened here in Calgary.   It was devastating for so many people, and I was stressed being home and not finishing work.  Fortunately we had a last day of school for the kids, and teacher’s got a food truck for our year end staff party.   Stefan had his bachelor party, they rented an RV and toured around Montana breweries.  At the end of June, we went camping in Radium with Mel & Trav

JULY

July was an INSANE month for us!   All of my friends and family in Ontario came out for the wedding.  Justin and his girlfriend, Chantal moved out here!  We had the Stampede, and then of course, getting ready for the WEDDING.  July 19 was the big day!  My friends put on a sweet bachelorette at Ranchman’s, and my aunt and mom did a sweet bridal shower for me in Canmore.  The wedding day was beautiful, and so many people came making it just so heartwarming.   After the wedding, we went to the Stamps game to watch Matt.  Stefan and I flew to Toronto for our honeymoon and met up with Jp and Lauren, who showed us around their hood - Leslieville.  We stayed at the Fairmount for 2 nights in TO, and then rented a car and drove up to the cottage, which we had all to ourselves for our honeymoon.    At the end of honeymoon, my parents came for a few days to see us and give us Kuiper.  We did a Trash the Dress shoot, which I LOVED!

August

In August, we were still in Ontario, we went to one of my friend’s wedding in London.  It was lots of fun.  My parents came as well.   We flew home with Kuiper and then a few days later I packed up my things and flew to LA.  My coworker rented a place in Santa Monica for the whole summer, so I went for 2 weeks to visit and drove back with her to Canada.  We went to Disneyland, SUP, to a comedy show in Hollywood, and rode bikes all over.  On the way, we took a few days in Vegas - my first time being there.  We rented a sick suite at MGM Signature, it was so cool!  We had such a blast on our trip.  Upon returning, it was time to get ready for school!   We did one last camping trip right before August ended.  Stefan took me to Montana, and we camped and went to a few breweries!

September

Back to school!  We are still living with the in-laws, our place should be ready in November!  I work my butt off to get the class ready, and I start with 22 students in Grade 5/6.  It was a busy work month, but we did go out to National for Alex’s birthday.  My class went on a field trip to study Trees and Forests

October

We celebrated my cousins’s daughter’s first birthday, I made her a cute owl cake.  We also went to Edmonton to visit Nick and Amanda, we had lots of fun and shopped at Simon’s (my fave).   I also bought a car!  I pre-ordered a 2014 Ford Focus ST, and had to wait until December to get it.   We had Thanksgiving at Matt’s girlfriends parents place, it was really nice.

November

A busy month!   Move in - NOVEMBER 19!   We had to do all the legal stuff with buying a house, had to pack everything, I still was busy teaching so it was pretty intense.   We celebrated Justin’s birthday at National, and went bowling.  I participated in Sight Night, a walk to support our Visually impaired students at the school.  I sold my beloved Subaru during our move.  We had an “alternative meat” night at Melissa and Trav’s, we all had to bring unique meats and drank vodka.

December

For the final month of 2013 we started settling into our new house.  Getting it painted, furnishing it, getting blinds, etc.   It is an ongoing project to get our house where we fill it is our home.  We put up our Christmas tree though, and that was awesome.   I finally got my NEW car - I LOVE IT.   School finished up for the holidays, a much needed break for me.  For my coworker’s birthday, a bunch of us went to Canmore to see Wil, that was really fun.   I worked on report cards over the break, and started planning for the new year.  Stefan and I went to see a few plays and had a few dinners, as is our usual holiday tradition.  Justin and Chantal stayed over for Christmas eve, and we made roast.  We had our annual holiday party as well at our house, which was nice and acted also as a housewarming too.   We went to a Hitmen game as well.

With the year over, it was amazing to reflect on such a busy and eventful year.  I am now married, have a new home, car, and feel so grateful to have such lovely friends, family, and fortune in my life.   I am so excited for what 2014 will bring, and I am so thankful for everything I have.

Listened to this album almost on repeat during the summer, driving from Los Angeles, to Vegas, and back up to Calgary.  Catchy songs, and a definite staple in my music collection.
